If the 1000D was out when I got my first DSLR I probably would have gone with it. My guess is that Olympus are rich enough to have a long term slugfest with canikon for entry market share.
Canon has said the purpose of the 1000D is for P&S shooters.
havign the larger Canon System would be more attractive to me than in-body IS. I am excited to get my hands on the 100D once it comes out, but the low end Canons feel low end even with a nice lens. I hoep the comparison shows that they are practically the same camera except for build quality. v=CKLz Akrt7Qs 'Desperate' is almost certainly the right word for canikon right now 1) Olympus seem pretty serious about taking market share in entry level DSLRs.
I think the 1000D poses a real threat particularly if they can lower the price down the line. And once punters have got used to that zuiko glass, most won't swap to a different system where some kit lenses can distinctly soft.
they might lower the price so they are selling the camera at a lose to poach customers and make a profit on accessories and higher end bodies. Both cameras will come out at the same time for the same price (0) equipped with a kit lens and have 10 megapixels.
Canon's Camera will ONLY be available ina one lens kit.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this list.
Canon unlike Olympus has a financial incentive to really fight for customers.

The 1000D has more AF sensors ( 7 over the E520's 3)E520 has 250% exposure compensation and more white ballance options, more metering options, and more JPG compression options. IMHO the cameras are pretty similar but the E520 edges out as it is more configurable, has slightly more buttons and a slightly higher build quality.
E520 has only .5 more FPS in JPG but does MUCH better in continuous RAW images. Canon seems to have made this body to compete with Oly's offerings and Nikon's D40-D60. Canon unlike Olympus has a financial incentive to really fight for customers.
havign the larger Canon System would be more attractive to me than in-body IS. They might be great, but they are built like creaky doo doo. It's all about the pictures in the end, and if thepictures are fine, whatever. (I think its a shame, I'd rather they kept out of the camera business, but there you go ).
